Coös Cycling Club Raises Funds for Youth Cycling Initiative
The Coös Cycling Club (CCC), a non-profit organization based in Gorham New Hampshire, is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of a fund-raising effort to launch Pete’s Bikes. Pete’s Bikes is a youth mountain bike initiative in memory of our friend and Randolph resident Peter Brockett, an active and generous member of the CCC who was passionate about sharing his love of cycling. Through Pete’s Bikes, the CCC works to reduce barriers to mountain biking, encourages an active lifestyle and a lifelong love of cycling in local youth. Donations made in Pete Brockett’s memory and additional funds raised by the Gorham Recreation Department enabled the CCC to purchase 9 mountain bikes to be used by local youth.
Following the initial purchase of the mountain bikes, focus shifted to raise funds for a trailer which would enable storage and transport of the bike fleet. The community support in this effort has been overwhelmingly successful.
To date the Coös Cycling Club has leveraged Pete’s Bikes on numerous occasions, successfully partnering with the Gorham Recreation Department to offer a series of guided bike rides for the summer program and collaborating with the Gorham High School to offer a day of riding as a component of their Mountain Day event. Finally, these resources have proved invaluable in the creation of the Berlin-Gorham Mountain Bike Team (BGMBT), a collaborative effort between the Berlin and Gorham Middle/High Schools. The CCC hopes to offer more youth rides in our community whenever possible.
Jeremiah Hawkins, coach of the newly formed Berlin-Gorham Mountain Bike Team (BGMBT) indicated the funds raised “will enable Pete's Bikes to purchase more quality bikes for the program and maintain the current fleet. Having and maintaining quality mountain bikes is essential to a safe learning environment and most importantly, enabling all kids to participate who have a desire."
