Trail Use Etiquette & Guidelines

The Coös Cycling Club is fortunate to have access and permission to build and maintain the 22 plus mile Coös Trails Network on a patchwork of public and private land, thanks to the generosity of several public and private landowners. We strive to maintain good relationships with the landowners who have allowed access which is contingent on the sustainable and responsible use of the trails by members of the mountain bike community.

The Coös Trails are designed and built for mountain biking, but are open to all forms of human powered recreation.

  • E-Bikes: Respectful use of class 1 e-bikes is permitted. Class 1 e-bikes are pedal assist only, with no throttle and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph. Class 2 and class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on the entire Coös Trails Network.

  • Walkers, Runners, and Hikers: Non-bicycle users should be prepared to encounter mountain bikes at any time and should remain aware of their surroundings while out on the trails. Certain trails across the network are designated with signage as “one-way” or “bicycle use only” based on the compatibility of the trail with multiple use types and to ensure the safety of all trail users.

  • Winter Usage: In the winter months the trails are groomed for fat biking. Non-bicycle users may not travel on snow covered trails without the use of snowshoes or skis. Boot packing (hiking without snowshoes) and other activities that penetrate beyond the first 1/4” of snow are prohibited.

  • Unauthorized Construction or Alteration: Modification or construction of trails or trail features in the Coös Trails network is not permitted without expressed consent from Coös Cycling Club. Please contact the club with any trail feedback or observations.

  • Equestrian activity and motorized uses are not permitted on the Coös trails network.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines could jeopardize access to the trails we love. We ask all trail users to be respectful of other users, honor the wishes of landowners, and to hold each other accountable as we strive to maintain good relationships and access to the trails we love.
